Change Course Proposal
WGSS 414 *SYSTEMS OF OPPRESSION: STRATEGIES FOR RESISTANCE

From Vicki Burton Director / Writing Intensive Prgrm, April 20, 2018 2:18pm
A number of things on the syllabus are not clear.
1. Please ask the proposer to contact me so that I can better understand the 2000 word assignment writing process. I can't match the assignment descriptions with the schedule. The auto-ethnography is not on the word count chart. Or it is called one thing in the syllabus and another on the chart.
2. The Bacc Core Committee requires that specific details be included in the syllabus (not just in BC question responses) on how each WIC outcome is integrated in the course. It is not enough to list how the outcome will be assessed. What sorts of in class informal writing will be used, and how do the exercises promote critical thinking? What critical thinking skills are learned in the critique paper?
Outcome 2: State in more detail what distinctive elements of writing in your discipline students practice and learn. What audiences? What genres do they use or learn about?
3. I recommend including an outcomes matrix in the syllabus. To whom shall I email this attachment?

Proposal

Proposal ID: 101976
Type: Change Course
Effective Term: Fall 2018
Justification:
The original course title "Systems of Oppression in Women's Lives" no longer describes the broader focus of the class. Given changes in the discipline away from fixed notions of of "woman," the course not only addresses these issues as they pertain to women, but also those who position themselves in various ways vis-a-vis gender categories. The course also address individual and collective strategies for change. Amending the title to "Systems of Oppression: Strategies for Resistance" better describes course objectives. In addition, to best serve our majors, we are also hoping to articulate this course as fulfilling the WIC requirement in the baccalaureate core.
