Proposal

Proposal ID: 102072
Type: Change Course
Effective Term: Spring 2018
Justification:
The motivation for the GEOG 324 category 2 proposal is:

1) The BS in Geography/Geospatial science requires students to take either GEOG 323 (WIC) or GEOG 324. Making GEOG 324 a WIC class balances students selections between these two alternative requirements for our major.

2) GEOG 324 also will be added to the Ecology option of the Biology major, if it has a WIC designation.

I shared our departmental concerns about this course as both an introductory Biological Sciences course and a more advanced WIC course with Julie Jones. If allowed, this would be the first course to be upper division with significant prerequisites in the Biological Sciences category of the Baccalaureate Core. The course prerequisites would effectively require our students to take it as juniors or later in most cases. It would also appear to be the first WIC course found in a Baccalaureate Core Perspectives category. After a good discussion, Julie Jones agreed the proposal would be revised to list GEOG 324 as a WIC only.

Integrative Biology supports this as an excellent new WIC offering. It will be particularly appropriate for some of our Ecology Option students.
