Proposal

Proposal ID: 102113
Type: New Course
Submission Date: January 19, 2018 10:54am
Approval Date: January 24, 2018 2:53pm
Effective Term: Fall 2018
Justification:
We have identified a need for a new introductory 300-level coarse in virology that would serve three groups: 1. Students completing a Microbiology Minor (which we plan to offer on-line); 2. Students in BioHealth Sciences and other majors who are interested in Virology but not at the advanced 400-level, or who lack the prerequisites for the existing upper-level course; 3. Students seeking an online course in Virology that is not encumbered by restrictive prerequisites. The proposed course is distinguished from existing courses as follows: MB 434/534 Virology (also taught by Theo Dreher) is more advanced and more comprehensive and has restrictive prerequisites (MB 310 and BB 451); BI 420 Viruses in Modern Society (taught by Valerian Dolja) is also 400-level with restrictive prerequisites (BI 311 or BI 314), and is offered only every second year; VMB 653 (Veterinary Virology), which is not accessible to undergraduates. In response to Jerri Bartholomew's liaison comment and discussion with eCampus, the syllabus has been changed to reflect a 4-credit course, which can then also become semester compatible and attractive to students from outside OSU. The extra credit is reflected in the syllabus as an extra exercise in several of the weeks and expanded group exercise. At least some of the exercises wil involve interpreting graphs and data tables from selected journal publications on current virology.
Comments:
Note: Jerri Bartholomew has added an additional comment, suggesting the course be 4-credits (see email in Documents section) (see response above)
