Change Course Proposal
ANTH 477 ECOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY

Status: Approved

Proposal

Proposal ID: 2928
Type: Change Course
Submission Date: April 10, 2007 1:19pm
Approval Date: May 31, 2007 2:29pm
Effective Term: Fall 2007
Justification:
RATIONALE:
I am proposing to change ANTH 477/577 to a four-credit class. In addition, I am proposing to change the course title from “Cultural Ecology” to “Ecological Anthropology.” The field of ecological anthropology has grown significantly in recent years, making it difficult for students to get an adequate grasp of the field within a three-credit course.

ADDITIONAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
The proposed four-credit version of this course will contain several requirements above and beyond the current three-credit version.

Reading: Students currently read two textbooks and a packet of journal articles. In the four-credit course, students will be required to read an additional textbook and select a book-length case study to read, with the guidance of the instructor.

Writing Assignments: Undergraduate students will be required to write a book review of their selected case study. The review will assess the problem being studied; goals or hypotheses of the study; study population and location; research methods used; main findings and/or arguments; and broader significance to the field of ecological anthropology. Graduate students will select a topic related to ecological anthropology, conduct a literature review, and write an annotated bibliography on that topic.

Exams: Exams for both graduate and undergraduate students will remain the same in format and will include short-answer and essay questions. Students will be expected to master the additional material included in the four-credit format in preparation for exams.
