Having direct assessment of degree program outcomes is highly desirable, but often difficult to achieve. The OSU Biology major succeeded in achieving this by including a national exam as part of its requirements by creating a 0 credit course (currently BI499) that is required for graduation. Following their lead, last year we sought and succeeded in gaining accreditation by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) with the purpose of having all of our graduating seniors take the ASBMB Certification exam. More information about ASBMB and their certification exam can be found on their website at . On this website, ASBMB writes about accreditation that "For BMB educators, access to an independent, nationally-recognized evaluation tool will materially assist them in meeting the growing demand from collegiate accrediting bodies, university administrators, etc., for regular outcomes assessment. Independent assessment will, in turn, assist them in pinpointing strengths and weaknesses in their curriculum.” With accreditation for our Biochemistry and Biophysics degree now in hand we are ready, following the lead of Biology, to create this course as a mechanism to ensure that students take the exam so we have the assessment information.
Taking the exam also provides benefits for our students, as those performing “acceptably” on the exam will have their degree “certified” by the ASBMB, and as it says on the ASBMB website, "receipt of a certified degree will affirm to prospective graduate and professional schools or potential employers that the recipient in question has … demonstrated a grasp of fundamental concepts and critical reasoning skills on the ASBMB Evaluation Instrument.” Also, for those who perform exceptionally well, the ASBMB will indicate that they have graduated with distinction.
