Introduction to Animal Use at OSU
Welcome to the Oregon State University Animal Health Reporting System. This system is designed to confirm daily animal health observations of campus animals used in teaching, testing and research.
In compliance with the USDA Animal Welfare Act Regulations, Title 9 C.F.R., Section 2.33 daily observation of all campus animals is required to assess their health and well-being. Daily observation of the animals may be accomplished by someone other than the Attending Veterinarian (AV), provided that a mechanism of direct and frequent communication is established so that timely and accurate information on problems of animal health, behavior, and well-being are conveyed to the AV (Sect. 2.33 (b)(3)). Weekend, holiday, and emergency care must also be readily available (Sect. 2.33(b)(2)).
This electronic system allows Principal Investigators, facility managers or their designees to report daily animal observations and alert the AV of any animal health concerns. The expectation is that this will be done at the end of the daily work shift. In case of urgent animal concerns the AV or designee should be called immediately for assistance. Veterinary care is available 24 hours a day by calling the Department of Public Safety & Oregon State Police at (541) 737-3010, the appropriate campus veterinarian will be contacted.
